The Indian Ocean: Our first glance!

Hello Everyone.  We hope you are all well.

Yesterday, Ozell and I took a train trip down the eastern side of the Cape peninsula on our way to Simon's Town and what we thought was going to be the tip of the Cape of Good Hope.  We didn't make it down to the tip of the Cape because there were nothing but Con artists operation shuttles from Simon's Town to the tip.  They wanted a pirate's ransom for a 12 km trip.  We were also in a time crunch.  We opted to have a nice leisurely lunch and drink at one of the seaside restaurants in Simon's Town before catching the train back to Cape Town.

Along the train ride, we caught our first glimpse of the Indian Ocean!  This part of the Indian Ocean is called False Bay.  The water is still extremely cold and the seas are choppy due to the high winds.  This pic was taken looking east across False Bay to the mainland on the other side.

Cheers,

Sean

Good day Sean,

I really wish that you had done some elementary research before labeling taxi operators in Simon's Town "con artists".
The distance from Simon's Town station to Cape Point is actually 27 km - Not 12 km as you claim.
Hence your 54km return trip was quoted at R4.63 per km. This is hardly a "pirate's ransom" - in fact probably the cheapest per/km fare in South Africa!
A retraction would be much appreciated.

Sincerely
Dave Hurwitz

Dave and Johan,

First, I am surprised that either of you found our blog post and read it out of the myriad of online pages on the internet. I'm glad someone reads our blog! It is designed for friends and family.

I'm happy to make two clarifications: 1) We were told by people on the train that Simon's Town was 12 km from the Cape. While we maybe should not trust all information we hear from people, we also do not have time to research everything about our trip. This blog is a stream-of-conscience and very informal. It is not journalism. So sorry that were mistaken on the distance. 2.) More importantly, we did not refer to Dave or his business by name. In fact, we were not even talking about Dave's business. Our "con artist" and "pirate's ramsom" terms referred to some minibus shuttle operations that we met at the train station. They wanted 350 Rand from both of us to take us to the Cape and back. Sorry, Johan, I do not know the names of those shuttles as we only briefly talked to them and then walked into town. Dave's offer of 125 Rand for each of us was much more reasonable. We decided not to take his offer because we were in a rush and decided that we just wanted to have lunch in Simon's Town instead. Sorry for any offense given or perceived.

Cheers,

Sean

Seems it was a bad day for information and now it gets worse: You did not get your first glance at the Indian Ocean. False Bay is still the Atlantic Ocean.
